Call for Workshop Proposals

VLDB conferences have become popular focal points for co-located workshops on topics related to data management. Continuing this trend, VLDB 2005, to be held in Trondheim, Norway, from August 30 to September 2, 2005, plans to feature a number of co-located workshops. Proposals for workshops are hereby invited and should be submitted, in PDF format, to the Workshops Chair, Klaus R. Dittrich, University of Zurich, (dittrich at ifi unizh ch), by February 7, 2005.

The following information should be taken into account when preparing a proposal:

  • Co-located workshops must be on topics that are of interest to some VLDB attendees.
  • Workshop duration can be 0.5 to 2 days (before VLDB) and 0.5 to 1.5 days (after VLDB). Workshops will be held at the conference hotel or at the nearby Norwegian University of Science and Technology (venue assignment is at the discretion of the local VLDB organizers).
  • All workshops will benefit from, but are also required to join, the general registration process of VLDB. A fixed amount (depending on the workshop duration) will be charged per workshop participant for meals, refreshments, etc. Beyond this, workshop organizers are free to set their own registration fees as they see fit, depending on publication and similar cost.
  • Though people are encouraged to also attend VLDB proper, it will be possible to register just for a workshop. Also, accommodation arrangements for workshop participants will be offered through the VLDB local organizers.
  • Workshop proposals should contain all pertinent information, including workshop title, short description of topic/style, workshop organizer(s), members of the program committee (at least 50% have to be known and confirmed at time of proposal), mode of proceedings publication, important dates, expected number of participants, and preferred duration and workshop dates (before/after VLDB).
  • The decision about acceptance/rejection of workshop proposals will be made by the Workshops Chair together with the General and Technical Program Chairs. Evaluation criteria include overall proposal quality, fitness with respect to the expected VLDB 2005 program, and availability of venue capacity. Notification will be given by March 1, 2005.
  • The organizers of successful workshop are required to closely cooperate with the Workshops Chair and the VLDB local organizers in order to finalize all details mentioned above, provide input for publicity, etc. In particular, local organizers will require that all workshops adhere to a specific general timetable in order to facilitate catering.
  • Please note that only accepted workshops are official VLDB workshops and enjoy support as mentioned above.
