At the first session this morning, David Konopnicki and Oded Shmueli received the VLDB 2005 Ten Year Best Paper Award.
The Organ Recital starts at 21:00 in the Nidaros Cathedral which is located within 15 minutes walk from the Royal Garden hotel. In the map on page 5 in the Conference Brochure, the Nidaros Cathedral is marked with blue bullet number 1.
Two VLDB 2005 crew will organize a walk from the Royal Garden hotel to the Nidaros Cathedral. If you would like to join them, please meet at the conference secretariat a few minutes before 20:30 (the walk starts at 20:30).
Sessions 15 and 16 have swapped rooms. Research Session 16, Architectural Issues, will be in Haraldshallen while 15, New Applications, will be in Tavern.

At tonight's Conference Banquet, Amol Ghoting, Gregory Buehrer, Srinivasan Parthasarathy, Daehyun Kim, Anthony Nguyen, Yen-Kuang Chen and Pradeep Dubey were awarded the VLDB 2005 Best Paper Award for their paper Cache-conscious Frequent Pattern Mining on a Modern Processor.
In the photo you see Yen-Kuang Chen, Srinivasan Parthasarathy, and Amol Ghoting; the three of the seven award winners that were present at the Banquet.
The web server at the Computer Science Department went down some time after 14:00. The web pages were unavailable until about 15:20. We are sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused.

Extra lunch tickets can be bought for NOK 230 in the conference secretariat. Tickets for a day's lunch must be bought no later than the day before.
The Conference Reception starts at 19:00 in the Archbishop's Palace which is located within 10-15 minutes walk from the Royal Garden hotel. In the map on page 5 in the Conference Brochure the Archbishop's Palace is marked with blue bullet number 2.
Two VLDB 2005 crew, one of them Christian Mönch in the photo to the right, will guide a walk from the Royal Garden hotel to the Conference Reception. If you would like to join them, please meet outside the conference secretariat a few minutes before 18:30 (the walk will start at 18:30).
Today the VLDB 2005 conference started with five workshops. From the early morning the conference venue was filled with expectant participants and quite a number of organizers dressed in VLDB 2005's red t-shirt (see photo to the right). Some photos from today's activities are shown in the Sunday page.
This afternoon the first VLDB 2005 work was done at the conference venue when 600 conference bags were packed. Check the Friday August 26: Preparations page for some photos from this boring but very necessary activity.
During the VLDB 2005 conference we have an exiting technical program, there's many social events available and there will be a lot of interesting people to meet. Still, you might have some time to seek out experiences outside the conference. To help you navigate in what Trondheim has to offer, we have compiled an overview of the main events that take place during the extended VLDB 2005 week; starting with Saturday August 27. Find out more at the Trondheim Day by Day page.
While at VLDB 2005 you can partake in a number of social events, all details on this can be found on the Social Events Page. Most events are included in the conference fee and open for all registered participants. However, some events require registration and some extra cash. The boat trip on the fjord is full. For the orienteering race, the sightseeing excursion, the trip to Ringve Museum, and the conference banquet (for accompanying people), tickets will be sold at the information desk during the conference (subject to availability).
Tickets for an event will be sold until one hour before the event starts. Extra tickets (NOK 800) for the conference banquet must be bought before Wednesday at 14:00.
Please note that the registration fee only includes Proceedings on a CD. There will be a limited number of printed proceedings for sale ($200) during the conference.
Papers will be available on the Complete Program Page from 0:00 Monday August 29. Slides will be available on the Complete Program Page at 06:00 the day the paper is presented. This will be preregistered slides; the presenter has the option of changing slides up to the start of the presentation.
The online registration for VLDB 2005 is closing at August 25, 2005: 15.00 local time (UTC/GMT +2). It will still be possible to register on site during the conference.
Oracle will host an Oracle Hospitality Event at Safari, Tuesday at 17:30 - 20:00. Use this occasion to talk to Oracle developers about their cutting edge database technology and exiting development opportunities.

The start time for the boat trip has been advanced from 18.00 to 17.45 on Thursday, September 1.
Due to lack of interest, the social event to Sverresborg Folk Museum has been cancelled. Those registered for the Sverreborg social event will be contacted, and get their money refunded.
It will still be possible to visit Sverresborg Folk Museum on your own, but the organized social event is cancelled.
It is no longer possible to order hotel rooms or edit hotel reservations (through accessing existing registrations), through the online registration for VLDB 2005. Royal Garden (conference hotel) and Rainbow Gildevangen, still have available rooms. Please use the web pages of the hotels to book a hotel room.
Important: When booking hotel rooms on the web pages of the hotels, please state that you are a VLDB 2005 participant in order to get the conference price for the hotel room.
It is still possible to register for the conference (until August 26, 2005) through the registration web page, but it is no longer possible to update existing registrations.

Added a VLDB City map to the VLDB website. The map shows the locations of the conference hotels, attractions in Trondheim, and shopping centres. The tourist information web page have also been updated to better match the VLDB City map.
Next year the VLDB conference will take place in Seoul, check the VLDB 2006 website.

An award committee consisting of Timos Sellis (chair), Christian S. Jensen, Richard Snodgrass, Gerhard Weikum, and Kyu-Young Whang has given the VLDB 10 Year Paper Award for 2005 to David Konopnicki and Oded Shmueli for their paper "W3QS: A Query System for the World-Wide Web". The award will be presented at VLDB'2005 where the award winners will give a one-hour talk.
The annual VLDB 10 Year Paper Award is an award to be given at the VLDB conference to the co-authors of the paper from the VLDB conference ten years earlier deemed to have turned out to be the "most influential paper in the VLDB Proceedings 10 years ago".
