Music: Trondheim Symphony Orcestra plays Dvorak & Bartók

Trondheim Symphony Orchestra has enjoyed a long musical tradition. Up to the 19. century Trondheim was the centre for sacred music, with many significant musicians settling. Along with the expanding european music culture, several music societies were formed. TSO was founded in 1909. TSO with its 75 musicians has established a solid position as an inspiring impuls not only for the local musical life but for the whole country.

This is the opening concert for the season. Trondheim Symphony Orchestra conducted by Eivind Aadland performs Cello concerto by Dvorak and Concert for orcestra by Bartók. Soloist is the internationally reknowned Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk.

Music: Trondheim Jazzfestival - Ed Thigpen with Trondheim Friends

This year's festival covers everything from early New Orleans jazz to current fiery improvised music. In addition you will find concerts in a modern style with a great audience appeal. The festival takes several steps out into the city by meeting the audience in venues Jazz has not been presented in before. There will be concerts in The Nidaros Cathedral as well as the Trøndelag Theatre, in the Trondheim Art Gallery and in high class Britannia Hotel.

A tasteful and subtle drummer who is a master with brushes, Ed Thigpen is still most famous for his longtime membership with the Oscar Peterson Trio. He has worked with Cootie Williams (1951-1952), Dinah Washington(1954), Lennie Tristano, Johnny Hodges, Bud Powell, and Billy Taylor's Trio (1956-1959). Thigpen replaced guitarist Herb Elliswith Peterson's group in 1959, staying with the masterful pianist through 1965 and appearing on dozens of records. After leaving Peterson, Thigpen spent two periods touring the world with Ella Fitzgerald during 1966-1972. He settled in Copenhagen in 1972, worked as a teacher, wrote several instructional books, and continued playing with the who's who of jazz as a freelancer.

Theatre: Norge, Midt-Norge by Marianne Meløy and Stian Hovland Pedersen

Trøndelag Theatre in Prinsens gate 18 is the main theatre in this part of Norway. ”Norge, Midt-Norge” by Marianne Meløy og Stian Hovland Pedersen tries to tell the story of our country since we got rid of Sweden in 1905. Dialogue in Norwegian.

Museum: Trondheim Art Museum - Summer Exhibition

Trondheim Art Museum has the third largest art collection in Norway with an emphasis on Norwegian art from 1850 until present day. Danish art from the beginning of the 19th Century constitutes the main part of the international fine art collection.

The 2005 Summer Exbition (open until September 4th) is focused on visual art by female artists. It shows paintings, photography and installations. Female estetics – illution or reality?

Exhibition: Paintings for a Cathedral

The Nidaros Cathedral is one of Scandinavia's largest buildings from the middle ages and by far the best known and most important Norwegian church building. Work on the church commenced around 1070, but the oldest parts still standing are from the 12th century.

This summer the Nidaros Cathedral hosts a celebrated exhibition, Paintings for a Cathedral, by Håkon Gullvåg who’s probably Trondheim’s best known contemporary artist.

Movies: Nova Movie Centre

The municipal cinema company in Trondheim has 19 screens, 8 at the Prinsen Movie Centre and 11 at the Nova Movie Centre - the latter located in close proximity to the conference hotel. With the exception of movies for children, all movies are shown in their original language with subtitles in Norwegian.

One of the movies on display is Madagascar - a new animation movie from the creators of Shrek and Shark Tale, DreamWorks Animation. Eric Darnell, director of Madagascar, was also the director of the "Antz" animation movie. Learn more about the movie at the Madagascar Movie site

Theatre: En gorilla søker hjem by Jo Strømgren

Trøndelag Theatre in Prinsens gate 18 is the main theatre in this part of Norway. Today’s play, ”en gorilla søker hjem” (a gorilla seeks home), by Jo Strømgren reflects over the relationship between man and woman in modern society. The dialogue is in Norwegian.
